Hailing from Thornaby, Scott John-Hodgson is among the talented chefs competing in the North East heat of the prestigious culinary competition. At 32, he leads the kitchen at Solstice, a Michelin Star restaurant renowned for its fine dining.
Originally, Scott envisioned a career in teaching. After studying sports development at Liverpool John Moores University, he shifted gears at 25, diving into the culinary world. Seven years later, he now helms a top-tier restaurant owned by acclaimed chefs Kenny and Abbie Atkinson.
Scott’s culinary journey began at the House of Tides in 2018, the Atkinsons’ Michelin-starred restaurant. Rising through the ranks to sous chef, he transitioned to Solstice in 2022. Remarkably, Solstice earned its Michelin star within eight months of opening.
Scott’s culinary philosophy emphasizes quality local ingredients, showcasing the elegance of simplicity and seasonal, sustainable practices. His menu this season is a tribute to North East rower Kat Copeland.
The 19th series of Great British Menu premieres on Tuesday, January 23, at 8pm on BBC Two. This season, the North East and Yorkshire region, represented by Samira, kicks off the competition. The show celebrates the Olympics and Paralympics, with Andi Oliver hosting and a judging panel featuring two-time banquet winner Tom Kerridge, restaurateur Nisha Katona, and comedian and food podcast host Ed Gamble.
